Hrm, my dad and brother both ride Harley's... neither is fat or short. It must get boring living a life full of hate of everyone who isn't like you.

Cruiser, sport, standard, dual sport, dirt bikes, mopeds. all of em are cool.

Couldn't care less who's name is stamped onto em.

Sad part is, I think they enjoy living in that hate.

But I will say riding to Detroit and hanging out for a few days I was surprised - riding my bike, in various areas around Detroit - wearing my full helmet and leather with jeans - I received almost 100% wave back from sporty and foriegn bikes. I received almost no wave back from any HD riders. I talked to some guys I know who are in a Harley club in the Detroit metro area and they all seem to think the waving thing is geeky. I'm guessing this must somehow follow through to more HD riders - don't know why, I just know in Ohio I get almost 100% wave back from all riders, which is a sharp contrast to metro Detroit. I've seen this on several trips so far, so I don't think it was a random thing either.

But I do think all these things seem to be regional - the way people drive/ride - how friendly people are in general - how much brand matters (very much an issue in the Motor City) - general speed over speed limit.

In Detroit (where I lived for much of my life and visit often) people are less likely to be open and friendly. Seems time has made them protective of their space - mental and otherwise. A lot of the guys in Detroit who ride Harleys are associated with the car industry, so they "buy American" to a fault. Everyone (well, let's say almost everyone) speeds in Detroit. At no time did I travel at the speed limit for safety sake in Detroit on the freeway. On a 65 MPH stretch of freeway I'm almost certain I did not see one car traveling less that 10 over and those folks were getting in the way. Except I do recall a couple Harleys that were not going so fast and blocking up traffic flow. They were not breaking the law, so I can't fault them there.

In my estimation, any bike one chooses to ride is cool. If you want a Harley, get one, it is a matter of personal preference. I would rather have a good, dependable cycle, which most are, than put more money into an image. Some time back, I bought stock in Excelsior-Henderson. The broker said "If you want to buy a cycle, buy any make, if you want to make an investment, buy Harley." I assume he meant either a bike or the stock. Needless to say, the E-H stock is gone. One other poster brought up the valid point of the saftey factors in a BMW. The last person I spoke with who owned a BMW would have nothing else but. We had a lengthy discussion about cycles, and I mentioned that in my estimation, BMW and Harley are masters of marketing, along with Jeep.
