500 Mile Service - Expectations

#1 Unread post by M109R »

Just had my bike in the stealer service dept for the 500 mile service. They found some loose bolts adjusted the clutch, etc...

After 100 miles of riding after the 500 mile service, checked the oil when gassing up. Oil level didn't even show on the stick!!! Had to put in 3/4 quart of oil to get it up to level.

When the bike came out new from the stealer the oil level was fine.

Question: Should I complain to the stealer service manager for not putting in the correct amount of this critical fluid and what should I ask for to make it right? (i.e. free next oil change.)

It really makes me nervous that if they miss this detail what else are they missing when working on my bike that could end up costing me my life.

Note: the M109R has a really funky way to check the oil (drive for 15 minutes, let it sit for 5 minutes, don't screw in the stick to check the fluid.) But if you are going to service these bikes and charge $200 for an oil change and adjustments you should know the facts.

And this is why you should start doing your own service. It'll be the only way you know it is getting done right. You'll be able to save a bunch of cash doing the regular stuff yourself and you can turn around and buy more bike stuff for yourself.

Your own service

I agree, do you know where I can get the service manual for the bike at a decent price?

I have no issue getting my hands dirty, been doing it on my past bikes and cars since I could ride/drive.

Besides what's the big deal with an oil change anyways...$55 bucks to go to new chrome!

The dealer is going to tell you that you didn't check the oil correctly, in a nice way he's telling you that ur too dumb to know how to check ur oil, like when I purchaced my ATV the dealer wanted an extra $200 to install a winch, I refused to pay that and the dealer told me its a big job that im too dumb to handle it and it takes his mechanic all day to install, I installed it myself in 1 1/2 hour and it was easy. I would never trust any dealer to change the oil on my bike, I change the oil myself cause I feel relaxed knowing it was done right.

That's actually a normal method. You need the bike to sit for 5 minutes to ensure that all the oil has drained back into the sump so as to give a proper reading. Not having to screw the stick all the way in for a level check every time is just a way of saving the threads from damage due to cross-threading.

As for having to add 3/4 quart of oil, I'm thinking that's probably the amount needed to fill up the oil filter. If they didn't (or couldn't - it depends on the orientation of the filter) fill up the filter before installing it, then when the bike is fired up the first thing that happens is the oil pump fills it and any other empty spaces right away, which results in an oil level drop next time you check it. At any rate, they should have done a final check of the oil level before returning the bike to you; I'd make a point of mentioning it to them next time you're at the dealer.

For service manuals, you can go to your dealer (who will probably not want to sell you one anyway) or you can go online here: http://www.repairmanual.com/.

Xtreme Service

#7 Unread post by M109R »

Finally able to call the stealer service about the low oil issue (see above)

They were very cool, appologetic and offered to fully refund the last oil change. I think is very cool of them and I will continue to go back.

If you are in Denver and need service, Xtreme Performance Center 303-660-5302. www.xtreme-performance.com

If you own an M109R watch they don't over fill when picking up the bike and don't underfill on the service. Bike is a pain when it comes to getting the oil right.

!!!CHECK YOUR FLUID LEVELS FREQUENTLY!!!
