The DUMBEST thing ever...

#1 Unread post by Mintbread »

And I did it.

I decided to take my daughter for a ride since we haven't been out for ages but I needed to wash the bike first and take care of a few other things as well.

So I fitted the centre stand, washed the bike and ran it for a few minutes so I could check the oil. It was a little low so I topped it up and then put the passenger pegs on so my daughter was a little more comfortable.
It was a short blast up the freeway to get to some favourite twisties but as I approached a stop sign to get onto said road, I put my foot down and it slipped out from under me. As I looked down all I could see was oil. It covered my leg and boot not to mention the entire right side of the bike and the rear tyre.

I pulled over immediately and realised that I had forgotten to replace the oil cap when I topped it up. Stupid, stupid, stupid. Luckily for us we had not gone far nor had we gone around any decent right hand turns as we would have ended up on our backsides.

Now I have the unenviable job of washing the bike over and over again all weekend to try and get the majority of oil off. I will also have to remove the rear brake pads and clean them up because they don't work to well at the moment.

A dumb mistake that took two seconds will end up taking two days to fix.

good catch on that one. I did notice that the oil cap on the bandit is a pain in the "O Ring" to get on properly.

Close call, but glad you were both alright. I can imagine the last thing you'd want would be to go down with your girl on the back.

Im betting you didn't check the oil correctly and ur bike really didn't need any oil. There is no japanese bike out there that uses oil unless the engine has an oil leak. Ever see what happens when you overfill the engine oil on ur bike? I did. My bike has 7800 miles and the oil was changed once at 4000 miles and I never, never added any oil. Just let it alone, don't touch it.

Check the oil

#10 Unread post by M109R »

That sucks but at least you check the oil.

My brother told me not to check the oil on my bike because it would never move and opening the filler would just let dirt into the oil. Went to the stealer service for an oil change and rode the bike about 100 miles before I needed gas. While getting gas my intuition told me to check the oil. Disregarding my brother's advice, I unscrewed the filler cap to find the level indicator BONE DRY. The bike was 3/4 of a quart low. Don't want to think what that low level would have done if I just kept riding without checking.

Check the fluids regularly and save $$$$
