2002 yamaha virago 250, cut out during idle

#1 Unread post by hankston »

hello,

i've been riding a 250 virago for about 6 months now and have been trying to learn how to maintain it myself. thus far, i've only changed the oil/filter, switched out and gapped sparkplugs, cleaned/reoiled the air filter.

this morning, while i left the bike warming up, it stopped running. i choked it and it ran at the higher idle with no problem. after a while, i took the choke off and it still sounded like it wanted to cut out, but i was good and warm and i had to go to work.

for the first several miles, the bike would make a pop or *fwop* sound whenever i would accelerate. eventually, it stopped and seemed to be running smoothly.

does anyone have any advice on what i can take a look at and change?

thanks for any help,
hank

Did it just start doing it out of the blue? Has anything been done to the bike since the last time it ran till today? Was it wet out, or has it been recently? Water in the gas?... use a new gas station yesterday? Loud party you had lastnight pissoff your neighbors?
No Witnesses.... :shifty:

yeah, just started yesterday, though today it had a little pop or two, nothing like yesterday's.
nothing had been done to the bike, just a ride to work and back. i got gas at my normal place and there was no rain [and it stays under a carport at night]. i think my neighbors have forgiven me for the loudness, but maybe they just want to watch me suffer and wonder.
today it sounded better, though, as i mentioned, there was a couple of mini-pops. it warmed up without shutting down during the idle, though, which was good.
