I'm 22 and paying $1863/yr through progressive in a place with moderate rates. Without comp and collision it's down to $430 which inludes some optional coverage. However I also only have 1 traffic violation from a couple years ago in my cage. The gsx-r 600 is my first bike. I always had my heart set on the 750, but I decided to be conservative. This is before I saw these forums which would never ever recommend a 600 for a beginner. I love my bike though and respect its power. It does depend on the individual though.

wow $1865 a year is a lot to pay on insurance, I know guys with wrecks and DUI's that are paying over $3K and I know a lot of guys that don't even have a drivers licence and they own and ride a crotch rocket

Have your grandson check out what deals they're giving the servicemen in Iraq. Harley is doing a great thing by offering steep discounts to those serving, maybe some of the others are too.

If he could get a cheap ex250 or something over there, maybe he's settle for that bike to learn on, and then get his R6. (and make some money on the little Ninja too)

Thanks guys ! I was overwhelmed when I saw the number of responses to my post. I have decided to help him out if he will take an accredited riders course before he buys a bike, and even then we will have to sit down and talk about an R6. Hopefully he will take my advice and start out on a less aggressive bike so he can gain some experience. To make things more complicated, I have two grandmas to contend with who are less than thrilled about him riding any type of bike.

On a lighter note, TechTMW suggested that I give him one of my XS650s....are you insane man ???? I'll give him my blood, my money, my car, but never one of my XS650s !! Just kidding

I know a few guys coming back from Iraq, Their opinion seems to be... What exactly is going to get your blood pumping like driving an M1 into a yard and doing donuts...basically nothing. and looking for that rush can get you dead quick

If he has a good head on his shoulders and is willing to take a MSF and learn then do what you feel is best. I started on my 2003 R6. I know my limits and stick to them. Its all about responsibility. If he is mature enough to stick to his skills and not try to find the bike's limit, he should be ok. You are the one that knows him and his attitude, etc. What about a Honda F4i or something not as "mean" as the R6.

That was going to be my suggestion. Start him off, by taking a training course.
