Old style chokes close an air thingie which raises the vacuum and causes more fuel to be drawn into the airflow. New style chokes open an extra fuel valve to let more fuel into the air without changing the air flow. In either case, they increase the amount of fuel introduced per unit of air.

Problem is, air is thinner at higher altitudes but the carbs flow the same amount of fuel (unless there is altitude compensation of some sort...our carbs don't have that)... so you go from 14.7ish:1 air:fuel mixture to 14.0ish:1 because of the altitude... then the choke (if applied) boosts it to 14ish:1.1... you get the idea. Plugs get fouled, engine runs rough, power is lost, etc....

LEO UPDATE Watch for periodic show of force by Tennessee Highway Patrol on the Dragon. Always take it easy along the river on US 129 as you approach the Dragon. Blount County SO will usually have a car shooting radar along here. There will be increased enforcement on western North Carolina roads this summer by NCHP. Watch for radar on the Cherohala and major 4-lanes such as US74/19 and NC28. Also expect to see NC Motorcycle Troopers on weekends in the area on a limited basis. We have seen Blount Co Sheriff cars on the Dragon at various times. Be aware that they will issue tickets for unreasonable speeds and unsafe riding.

I read somewhere else that they're stepping up the use of unmarked cars this year and are really cracking down on everyone. There aren't many opportunities to speed while on the Dragon, but there are a few small straights where you could easily double the 35mph speed limit and get busted.

That's sad. Why are you even on the forum if not to share your awesome finds and experiences. Like thousands of bikes are going to rush up to Alberta Canada and ride at the same time as you if you spoke of a good road.

Get real....

I've seen so many videos of "aggresive riders" wobbling all over the double yellows to convince me that you are taking your life in your hands riding down there.

It can get squirelly down there but it's not as bad as its image.

You might want to pull that stick out of your collective butts and notice the green smilie after what I've posted. Somewhere in my 2900 posts there are lots of details of my rides from Alberta to B.C., Idaho, Washington and Wyoming. I was KIDDING!

most of the cops arent going to have much luck chasing sport bikes on the skyway. they could catch mine. but 600+cc sport bikes could smoke a cop car. im not condoning running from the police but lets be honest, it does happen and rather successfully at that. i was up there on saturday and i didnt see any cops either place.

Unless they can travel faster than light they cannot outrun the radio.

Ummm...yup...those were the unmarked cars alright.

did the dragon about a month ago...was fun but on a big bike more of a workout than a joyride....enjoyed hellbender rt 29 coming off of it more...

Actually, it's US 28.

Ummm...yup...those were the unmarked cars alright.

I didnt see any when out there...but the deals gap site shows pics of mc troopers as well. Radio and bike cops who ride the route regularly equals jail for runners.

Enjoy the riding no need for excessive squidlyness for fun there.
