I have been riding this season with a GS500F. I really like the GSXR-600's. I was looking at them before I found my GS. I love the GS but the Gixxer is what I really want. Do you guys think there is anything wrong with getting one next year?

it all depends on you.

some people upgrade way later, some only after a few months.

some don't even upgrade, and some are like me.

I got what I did to learn the basics. And not on a machine that would kill me if I made a mistake. I think by the end of this season I will be alot less prone to making noobie mistakes. Like the one I made today. I am not bored with my bike. Nor do I think I can ride it to its potential. I am just wanting to upgrade to the bike I have wanted for a long time.

The only set back is that I am having trouble justifying the cost.

it's normal price and it's actually a little cheaper than the rest.

the new R6 is the overpriced one... it's almost as expensive as my gixxer750.

I could not agree more. Plus I think the rear end of it is ugly as all sin.

if you think you are ready based on your riding and practicing, and can justify the cost then go for it...if it's still a bit of a tough sell to yourself, wait another year

but if you find a wicked deal in the meantime that would be a different matter completely :)

Having "put in your time," the only one who can actually answer that question is you. Do you feel confident in moving up to a bigger faster bike?

You might also want to ask yourself why you want the bike you want.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

cost is tough. Its also gonna drink a lot more gas than your 500, and while your current bike likes its cheep liqour, the gixxer's gonna demand dom perrigon and grey goose. premium gas is required. also the insurance is gonna go up probably 4 fold on it. Just things to consider. The gas will cost you probably 1.5 times as much, and the insurance will cost you 3-4 times as much, and thats if your payments on the bike (if financed) are the same.
what does all this extra cost get you? can you afford it? I know when I upgraded to my SV from the 650ls, well, it was probably similar if not greater of a change of machine and use than your jump. Was it worth it? I think so. Can I afford it? yes, though there are a LOT of things that I cant do as much because of paying extra for the bike. Would I have done things differently in the begining knowing all I know now? yup. I probably would have gone with the GS500 or the ex 500 or a bigger cruise to start with. (mine had a lot of odd sounds with it and sounded like it was gonna be not long for the world soon, and was way too small for me to comfortable ride on anyways, so its different).
not trying to stear you away from the gixxer, just throwing out other ideas right now, alternatives. you could make some small upgrades to the gixxer, maybe an exhaust to get more of a badass sound, which might increase your riding pleasure. you could throw clipons on there for the riding position, you could upgrade the suspension a little here and there, you could get grippier tires, custom cut your fairings to look cooler. there are likely a number of real performance upgrades you could make, some for very little money. Now if you are gonna throw thousands at the bike to make it an underpowered gixxer (what people oftend do with my particular bike) then maybe just go with the gixxer. However if you add stickier tires and new filers and exhaust with a rejet and better springs and oil in your GS, theres absolutely no way that on the STREET you can run near your performance failure point with the bike. You said you were not bored with the gs, so maybe some of what I wrote isnt applicable. but you also want what is intended and designed for racing, so its likely you want the speed and cornering. Ebay parts can cheepen the upgrade costs, and you get to know your bike on a very intimate level. if your reasons for liking the gixxer are aesthetic or cool factors, realize that you are only impressing other bikers, most girls and non-bikers couldnt tell you the difference between a gixxer, my bike, and your bike if they were all sitting next to each other (trust me, been at the dealership with two nonbikers-gf and roomate, parked next to a gs500, sam color, they didnt know the difference between either of those and any of the ones on the show room "they are, different colors? oh and that one has only one headlight?...) and you can make your bike look cooler than a gixxer pretty easily. if its the down and forward body position, well they have ALL kinds of handlebars sitting out there on ebay and the store shelves just ready for you to get down into that.
like I said I have nothing against gixxers, if thats what you want for whatever, reason, go for it. I am only posting alternatives because I honestly doubt that I needed to get my particular bike, and the cost with it. I dont regret it most of the time, but when its harder to afford everything and I cant take that lovely woman in my avatar (and her lovely little girl) out to dinners and such, well, it makes me think about it really hard.
balance, man, its all about making sure the extra cost is equal with what you REALLY gain
