Yamaha XS400 Oil Pressure Lamp Problem

#1 Unread post by Vikam68 »

Hi i am new to this Forum, but would like some help with an issue with my Yamaha 1981 XS400SH, while driving i get the red Oil Pressure lamp blinking, i have checked the Oil Pump and it seems like its working as i manually turned the Sprockets, i also changed the Oil filter and made sure there was enough oil in the engine, but with no luck...i also did check the connection to the Oil Pressure Switch and cleaned that out, but the light is still blinking and sometimes stays on longer....and i am thinking it might be a broken Switch, but wanna try everything before buying a 60 dollar part without beeing sure....would like someones input on this

Thanks

Maybe the sensing unit is buggy? Do you own a service manual? It should detail how to verify if the switch is working properly (I know my manual does for mine)...

Yes i have a manual i acctually have 2, one is the original that came with the bike, the other one is a Haynes Manual, i am wondering if installing a Oil Pressure Gauge would be a good idea, but since i have never done this before i am not sure how to install it....does it go in where the switch is?

Also very hard to get any parts for this bike i had a Plug Viewer brake because i tightened it a little too much, but yeah i am a little lost in what to do, the switch costs about 55 dollars, and i dont wanna waste 55 dollars if thats not whats wrong...is there anyway to test it...and if there is how?

Thanks

Got the oil Pressure switch yesterday, put it on the bike and started it up but light still came on, so i am thinking that its a bad connection somewhere in the electric, because i took the bike for a ride around the neighbourhood and everything seems to be running fine, and in the see glass for the Oil i can see that the oil is dissapearing when i rev the engine up, so i guess i should go thru some wires and see what i can find.

get an oil pressure gauge and test how much pressure your oil pump is producing, if that is ok then I think you may have a ghost in the electrical, have fun trying to find it
