Another death penalty thread. I haven't read all the comments nor have I read about this case. I oppose the death penalty in all cases regardless of the crime(s) committed. Life in prison without parole is a far greater punishment.

There are way to many errors being made in the US court system. Death can not be reversed. The death penalty is also sought for and given to far too many poor people who can not afford competent counsel.

If you don't believe me name one millionaire that has been put to death in the United States.

Name one millionaire that goes around murdering people. They don't stick you with the death penalty for white-collar money crimes.

When they first picked Yates up, she said she killed her kids and was a bad mother, then later added the whole devil thing.

I think she just had a rough life, mental problems, too much stress dealing with all those kids, a husband who probably was more concerned with solving her symptoms rather than the problems, and just snapped...decided to wack them off. According to the reports she planned it a couple of times before she actually did it. Sounds premeditated to me! Plus the fact that the crime was so violent. These are reasons, they aren't excuses and she shouldn't get any leniency because of it.

There are many problems with the court system, and I don't advocate the death penalty, but there's zero doubt here. She did it, she confessed, 5 kids are dead, she KNEW it was wrong, otherwise why would she tell the cops that she murdered her children and she was a bad mother and wanted to be punished for it? - she would have said she was releasing them or something (like that story some other woman made up after dumping her baby off a bridge)...lets not throw the burden on society by keeping her alive on our dollar and (heaven forbid) she ever got pregnant or step foot on the streets again.

Do you have kids Mr. Grompers?

I'm not a big fan of the death penalty either, but the fact that it involved innocent children makes ME want to be the one to flip the switch.

I only read the original post, but isn't this an old story? Like, as in it happened a couple years ago?

The courts screwed up and they have to retry her, so everything old is new again. Aparently people enjoy their old outrages better than finding new ones... sounds neurotic to me but what can we do? :|

Thomas Capano (convicted in Delaware around 1997)

Whats notable about this case is the prosecution actually sought and received the death penalty for Capano. It was later commuted to life.

I don't have kids. I understand that some cases have overwhelming evidence or are especially heinous. Unfortuanately, the law has to be applied equally to everyone or not at all. The death penalty is not applied equally in the United States. That is one of the many reasons I oppose it completely.
