Bought a Sporty, suggestions needed

btw nice score sounds like you got a nice price. I know what you mean about Indiana harley's. A friend of mine offered me his harley sporty for $5,000 and I laughed at him (looked about the shape of yours, maybe a little worse) But he listed it on e-bay and got almost twice that.

for the mufflers, it looks like it has slip on tips, so you should be able to pull off the tips (and send them to me for the advice lol) and replace them with slip on mufflers which can be found all over e-bay or swap meets ( check with abate of indiana they have some good ones).

I am not positive on the fins but what I come to learn is you can paint in between the fins then polish the outside edges. The inset parts trap the air and the outer edge disapates (ms?) the heat. don't quote me though just my impression

I thought it had slip on tips as well, until I took them off today Nope, they're all one piece. They have chrome covers that go on top and are held on with a clamp.

I found a Shovelhead forum and asked over there about painting the jugs and those guys all say yeah, it's ok as long as it's a thin coat. One guy suggested a thin coat of VHT.

Got two layers of primer on the tins tonight. They look great. My first time painting, so I'm glad I can learn on the first coats of primer, since they can be sanded out. I had a few pretty serious sags. It's hard to paint something that's hanging in the air like that! I'm sure they're ready to sand by now, but we're off to the fireworks, so they'll have to wait til tomorrow

Yeah, there's one for sale in the little town near me - and it's been for sale since about April - it's a 1983 Hugger, looks awful, and the sign on it says "$5,000".
I have a feeling it'll be sitting there for a LONG time.
What I paid for mine may sound like a lot to a lot of people, but around here, it was a steal.

Hi Ozzy! Thanks for the encouragement. I am glad to hear that someone else besides me is looking at my website - and also glad to see another Harley lover from another country.

As far as doing it for a living...haha! I don't think so. I'm enjoying it immensely but only because I lucked out and got a month off of work. We had a "down week" (layoff) and I had two weeks of vacation scheduled immediately afterwards - which I've just started the second week of - and they are talking about having another down week next week. It worked out well for me - 4 weeks off to work on my bike! If I were working it would be going even more slowly than it is.

I can't wait to see the final product either. I think it's going to kick "O Ring" I'm ready to ride!

haha - did a "Preview" on this post, and I see that "O ring" was substituted for another word. Ok, can I say, "Going to kick some donkey?"
