If that's the original, it's an O-ring chain. I get the same kind of chattering on my '93 Nighthawk whenever the chain is getting a bit dry. At 18,200 you might be coming close to the end of the chain's useful life, so replacing it might not be a bad idea. I've got about 15K and change on mine and figure it'll go before 20K. It still looks fine, but when I put it on the center stand and spin the back wheel, I'm starting to see a small variation in the tension as the chain goes round. That's a sign that some of the rollers are starting to wear.
