cleaning leather

#1 Unread post by ofblong »

what do you guys use to clean and condition your leather? I have a friend in another state who has a left over leather jacket that needs conditioned and he is giving it to me for free (gotta love that :D). I also need to clean and condition the saddle bags that came with my bike and my old boots. neither are waterproof anymore.

Clean??? Leathers??? Bu, bu, but...

On the rare occasions I actually clean up my gear it's either polish on the more rigid stuff or dubbing.

If the leather simply needs cleaning, use saddle soap. If there's debris on the leather, scrape and brush it off.

If the leather needs reconditioning, then I've heard people recommend Lexol leather reconditioner.

For waterproofing I use Dubbin. Turn the cake into an oil with some heat from your stove or use a hair dryer to melt the top layer, then dab it on.

thanks guys. I ended up getting murphys oil soap and some lexol that was recommended to me on another forum :D. I got a free leather jacket from someone that needs to be cleaned and reconditioned so I figured id do my saddle bags and boots at the same time :D.

Leather Cleaner

#7 Unread post by M109R »

Fairchild Sports Leather Cleaner and Conditioner (They have water repellent too.)

www.fairchildsports.com 714-258-2120 or at your local Honda Stealer.

Stuff works great on new and old leather, cleans and moisterizes the leather back to it's soft supple texture.

Be careful what you use if not specifically designed for leather and test it in an inconspicous spot first.

Don't use on rough-out suede leather if any of you still have those easy rider leathers.

Saddle soap is good. Silicone or an animal by poduct for water proofing is not, including Dubbin. Use bees wax. Animal by products will actually break down the fibres in leather, and eventually cause it to wear out faster. And don't use stuff like Mink Oil. If you want leather to stay supple, keep it clean and use bees wax. If you want your leather goods to last a loooooooooooooong time, stay away from suede. Stick to split or smooth leathers. :santa:
