1980 Yamaha XS 1100 slips in second gear

1980 Yamaha XS 1100 slips in second gear
I have a 1980 Yamaha XS 1100 that slips when I give it about half throttle or more in second gear. There is little doubt in my mind that it is an internal transmission problem because it only does it in second, but I was just wondering before I tear it apart, if anyone knows exactly what part usually needs to be replaced when this occurs. Has anyone else experienced this with this bike?

Unless you mean it is slipping out of gear and not slipping-grabbing-slipping again, I think it's your clutch. Tranny's don't slip in and out of gear. They can slip out of gear if the dogs are rounded off, but that doesn't sound like your problem. Why it happens in second gear only.... who knows. Maybe the combination of gear ratio/torque output/your style has something to do with it....?

You could put used parts into it, but why risk it for so little return? The parts are not the expensive part.... removing the engine, splitting the cases(almost total dismantle of engine/tranny unit) and gaskets to put it back together are what eats time and money here. Cassette transmissions start to sound like a good idea when repair work is involved, eh?

Sorry to revive this post, but I have been away for a while and not had the bike available to remind me that I need to fix it...
I do not believe that it is the clutch or the fork. It ONLY slips in second gear no matter what I do. I can accelerate quickly in first gear or third (full throttle), but when I use even one third throttle in second, it rapidly alternates between slipping and grabbing.
If it were the fork, it would pop out of gear and I should have to shift back in, but it does not pop all the way out.
I have considered that perhaps the teeth in second were getting rounded, but wouldn't I have sparkly oil from metal fragments if that were the case? I just changed the oil yesterday and found nothing unusual.
Any other thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Shift forks for 2nd go in XS1100s ... I had to replace mine... whoever said $1500-2000 is smokin crack though... cost me less than $100.
However, it isn't really a slipping sort of thing... more like a "can't shift into 2nd" sort of thing. Maybe it varies.
Simple exploration of the transmission will give you an answer. Just go easy on the RTV when you re-assemble and don't get any into the blind screw holes.
