Ok, I just could not resist bragging in this thread... dug up some pics of my old '86 XLH 1100 that I bought new in '87 while stationed in Calgary.

Here she is shortly after the purchase...

Had a Velorex sidecar attached for a couple of years. Here's the rig at a change of command parade at the unit where I worked (long story)...
Image

Took the sidecar off and did the first of several style changes in '89...
Image

Got posted to Borden, ON, and redid her again in '91...
Image

And her final incarnation in '94...

I traded her in on a new Triumph Thunderbird in '95 and went British. Of all the bikes I've had since then, only my '71 BSA and this Sporty are the ones I'd love to have again.

Who is that young man in the pics

Even though I can't see myself buying on, it seems that the endearing Sportster could be the most successful model HD has ever consistently produced........

I recently bought a 2003 100th Anniversary model with 6K miles on it and rediscovered how much I liked Sportsters. I owned 3 others from the early and the dark years of AMF, but this bike is a jewel. It puts a smile on my face that won't wipe off. 100 to 150 mile rides are no problem as far as comfort goes.

I just had the local Harley shop perform the 5000 and 7500 mile checks on it and it runs, rides and performs even better than when I bought it.

The wife won't ride on the back because she doesn't like the seat, but I also have a C-90 Suzuki that is plushed out for her to ride pillion on. I have tagged this Sporty as a keeper.

Dyin'? Boy, he can have this little life any time he wants to. Do ya hear that? Are ya hearin' it? Come on. You're welcome to it, ol' timer. Let me know you're up there. Come on. Love me, hate me, kill me, anything. Just let me know it.

I feel that I am right fortunate to have a wife that tolerates my hobbies.

Does the gear shift ever quiet down or is it always a loud bang? It doesn't bother me - but I just wanted to make sure it was normal. I know a lot of other bikes don't make that kind of noise.

Is that shifting down into 1st? Yeah...they seems to have a bang...acting going on. That is my experience...my Sporty, DYNA, and my bagger all have it....u get used to it after awhile!
