Questons about a 2001 Yamaha R6

#1 Unread post by Mustang83 »

hey guys.. what do you think about to 2001 yamaha R6.. i had an option to buy one for $3,400 .. it had 2200 miles on it.. do u think thats a good deal..? it has an high mount exhuast. carbonfiber clutch and front break levers. the guy took all the stickers off .. the tank still has the stickers.. no body dammage.. and as of right now he said that it was stilling for a year with out riding it.. he just started it ever few days.. so now it runs a lil rough.. the guy said it needs new spark plugs and might need new spark plug wires too.. do u think it might need the carbrator cleaned.. if the gas was sitting for a bit it could need a fuel cleaner.. so do u think its a good deal to get the bike and just go have it tuned up.. has there been any problems with this year bike.. ? and major issues.. ? anything i should look for... please let me know if you can..

Thanks

That's a lot of mods, and very few km for a bike that cheap. A new R6 costs pretty close to 10 grand, and tall the mods would add another couple thousand minimum. And he's selling it for just under 4?

Sounds a little to good to be true, I'd look into it to make sure that something isn't actually wrong. Sounds like it might be a trouble bike.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Let him sort the plugs/cables/carbs, and come back, to see if it still sounds rough.

2000 is not a lot of miles for a bike to be sounding odd, unless either it was thrashed whilst still breaking the engine in (not unlikely on an R6), or as you say, the carbs are all gummed up. There's probably no easy way to tell decisively, until it's all sorted out.

About the 2001 R6

#5 Unread post by Mustang83 »

yea i hear what all of you are saying.. he has 2 bikes.. he has the 2001 R6 and a 1000 GsxR.. he also did the sprocket.. he originally wanted 4 for it.. but i am a friend so he said he would drop the price to 3400.00. he said if i want he will have it all tuned up and fixed and back and running to perfect condition in if i pay 4,000. he did let me ride the bike around, he saw how it was running.. he told me he let it sit for a bit so the gas was kinda thick... so how much do u think it would cost to do plugs wires and clean the carbs..? i havent riden any other R6 yett.. so i dont know how they are supposed to feel.. i had a ninja but it was only a 250.. so this inst going to feel like that bike at all.. lol but anyway i just wanted to make sure i know everything befor i buy it..

Thankyou for you replys

Probably the first thing to check is to see if it has a salvage title. Even if the bike shows no damage it could have been rebuilt with a salvage title. You could check to see if the front forks look like they're in alignment. Could be an easy fix but it shows it's been on the ground. Look for deep scratches or cracks in the frame or bodywork.
As far as the engine goes it could just be gummed up carbs or a more serious problem. Look for oil leaks. Check the condition of the chain and sprockets. Make sure the bike shifts good through the gears.
It would be worth the money to pay the extra $600 and be able to hear the bike run properly. I'm sure we can think of some more things to check.

did you ask about the title is it clear or salvage? i still would be cautious with a deal like this as mentiond those bikes do not come cheap along with all the extras. the guy could have sold it to someone else for that price in that condition by now, rather than dealing with you being undecided and taking such a long time to close the deal. hope hes not trying to take advantage of you some how. go to a local shop and see if you can ask one of the techs to do an after hours inspection of the bike for you, offer him 20 bucks to do it.
