Kawasaki, GPZ 750 '99 Has anyone heard of this bike?

#1 Unread post by royzito »

Good afternoon,

My stepson is considering buying a 1999 GPZ 750. Has anyone heard of this bike? If so, any thoughts or reviews on it? The guy he's buying it from wants $4500.00, but my stepson says it only has 9,000 miles on it and is spit clean.

Thank you in advance for your advice or input on where I can find info about this.

Roy

i have a feeling yo dont have the year correct. I dont think they made that bike then, but earlier, at least not in the us.
Its also not listed on KBB's site:

http://www.kbb.com/kb/ki.dll/ke.kb.md?k ... 9;Kawasaki&&&&&

I do know there were GPZ's, such as the 1100 in 95-95, but thats different then what you're explaining....

Thank you for your speedy response.

A subsequent phone call to Dallas, (Where Bud lives) provided more info. Turns out the bike is a 1999 ZX7. He originally told his Mom that it was not a speed bike, in order to convince her to lend him the $4500 to buy it. He wasn't happy that we were researching it.

I've read several reviews, and for what it is, it seems to be a well made, reliable bike. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Roy

It may be called a ZZR instead for that year.

As your research has probably uncovered, the ZX7 is a "speed bike". My friend's stock '98 model shows 108 hp at the rear wheel, when run on the dyno. The engine, frame and suspension are built for racing. It's a very solid, light bike.

Whether or not it's reliable will depend on what the previous owner did with it. If it was a track bike, I'd stay away. Especially at the $4500 price.

i have a 1984 GPZ900R (AKA ZX9-R) and its probably equivalent to the GPZ750 (AKA ZX7)

the reason its equivalent is because my bike has about 105-110 HP, and since its older, it has less torque. the bike is very fast and strong. the biggest plus is that its smooth when you increase the throttle.

is your son a first time rider? i started on my gpz900 and i was one of the very few who are very disciplined and have yet to go past 8krpm. if your son is young, its very likely he will surpass the 9krpm point and go to redline. thats where it starts getting dangerious because speed increases so damn fast.

other than the engine size and unskilled status, its a very nice bike, made very strong and reliable. for 9k miles it may have been well taken care of. 4,500 dollars is right below the KBB value so it might be a fine deal. (not excellent, just fine)

Happy Labor Day and thank you for the replies.

Thank you for looking up his bike in the Kelly Blue Book. Here's the latest updates. The purchase has been made, and Bud swears you can 'eat off the tank.' Never raced, garage kept.

Bud, the stepson, is 39 years old, and has been riding since he's been 10. And, you're right. The reason he said he was confused on the ZX7 language is that he did own a GPZ 750. So I guess its a legitimate mistake.

Thanks for all your input. I'll see the bike when he makes that ride from Dallas down here to Sunny Fort Myers, FL

Ride Safe!!
