Ezybass Goes To School

Started the Motorcycle Rider Safety Course today at 9 am and it was quite a humbling experience. There are only 3 of us taking the course, one woman who has a dirt bike at home that she rides a lot, an older gentleman at 65 and me at 63. The woman really showed us two old farts a thing or two although she did drop her bike once taking a turn too sharply. I also dropped mine once (a 250cc Yamaha Virago) trying to do the same thing. It was really hot in the parking lot where we practiced and by 5 pm we were happy to call it a day. Tomorrow we will be spending more time riding and less time in the classroom and it's supposed to be even hotter. Should be an interesting day!

Wow - such a small class. We had 12 in our class. Hang in there. I know it's tough out in the heat, especially when you have to be still at times. But you will encounter those situations in the real world too (traffic jams in hot weather are rough). Good luck and keep us posted!

It was hot in Canada? Was it 18*C?

Make sure to keep hydrated, getting dehydrated really screws up your body. Good luck on the course and have fun!

Ezbass,
My husband is your age and altho the course was tuff on us (most of the other riders between 18 to 32) we are enjoying the fruits of our labor now! We also had a large group with 8 men and four women (myself included) Good luck to you and hope to hear back soon!!

Well I live on the other side of the pond from him and it was almost 35C (95F) here today..., it's cooled off to 21(70F) as of right now.

Sunday, day 2 of the safety course:
Because our instructor didn't want to disturb the neighbours on Sunday morning, we started off watching a video which showed good and bad riders, techniques, countersteering, riding attire, etc. The video showed a guy wearing shorts and sandals riding off on his bike with a shapely blond on the back who was wearing a thong. Some of the stuff we saw was scary and one of the students jokingly asked if he could get his money back.

The rest of the day was spent riding in the school parking lot, figure eights, going through pilons, emergency stops using front brake only. It was during this front brake stop when our 65 year old rider joined the rest of us in dropping his bike once, ouch! He needed a few bandages on his elbow and his self confidence was shaken.

Our next class is Tuesday when we practice part of the day then take the skills test at ICBC in the afternoon. If I pass, I will be able to ride a bike without an instructor during daylight and without a passenger. I'll have another 8 months or so to practice and then take the road test and get my licence.
