dies in gear

#1 Unread post by swatt20 »

I've got an 2003 yamaha roadstar, due to ailments I haven't been able to ride. I have been starting it up on regular basis and letting it run for awhile. My problem is I was going to ride it around the block today. The bike would die every time I put it in gear. Can use some suggestions please, and much thanks.

This may sound like a dumb question, but are you trying to put it in gear with the side stand down?? If you are, it's going nowhere.

I went out and checked and it still dies when trying to put it in gear, even with the kickstand up

My guess is that if the bike starts and runs ok when it's in neutral, and then dies when you drop it into first gear, you have an issue with the side stand safety switch. If you don't have the knowledge to check it out, find someone who can check the switch for you. Since I don't have any other info on the bike, I'm just guessing.

Couple of other reasons. Is your idle too low?...Is there too much play in your clutch lever? You say you've been starting it up on a regular basis but never mentioned moving the bike! Not good..You don't just start her up and then turn it off....after a while, you'll build up condensation and that could be the cause for all this...Did you try a gas tratment? How are the plugs? I could go on for a while....check all these questions out and if the problem persists, then take it to a stealership...I can't stand bringing my bike to them...they'll tell you that you need a whole new engine if they gather that you are clueless! :?
