Do you carry extra fuel with you?

I just had my first chance to see what a full tank of gas will get me without using reserve. 2 gallons 110 miles right on the nose my bike died. Switched to reserve drove the last 1.5 miles to the gas station and filled back up lol. Perty cool the bike immediatly dropped me down to 55 mph and wouldnt let me speed up just before it ran outa gas.

The only place I know to be worried is in Utah going to Vegas where there is one exit space that is 200+ miles to the next one. That's cutting it close on most bikes.

Also out west you really have to be careful riding out in the boonies..sometimes very long stretches without gas stations and on those roads even less traffic to help you if you mess up.

My bike has a fuel gauge, and a 5.5 gallon tank. I fill up around the 200 mark, or whenever my needle gets close to empty... better to go by the needle though. I must have got some cheap gas once, and only managed 34mpg (normal is closer to 40mpg), so that changed my normal range by quite a bit (citgo sucks, BP is better).

I camp when I tour and carry an MSR stove which uses those bottles. The stove I bought will burn just about anything, including gas. So I fill up the 1 liter(33oz) bottle with super before I go out on tour. The stove doesn't really burn that much gas so I always have a spare quart or so of gas if need be.

As to the person who said carrying camping fuel is dangerous. I carry mine in my side bags with my clothes and other stuff and have never even noticed a hint of odor so I don't think leaking is an issue. And if I go down/get hit hard enough to make that thing leak or break, then there's a good chance that my tank is already leaking gas or that I'm already dead.

Put me in the camp of the folks who think carrying extra fuel is dangerous. Plan your ride ahead. Also, there is no penalty for filling whenever it may be convenient, including before you bike needs to be flipped to reserve.

My VTR1000 is a pig on gas, that said the only time i carry MSR 1 ltr gas bottle in the tank bag is when im riding with friends and i know there range is longer. Ive only used it twice so tbh just plan accordingly.

No amount of planning will make the ride betwen St. George, Utah and Las Vegas any shorter.

yeah really, just know how many miles you have traveled. Know how many miles your tank on average can go. And when you fill up, see how much gas you used. Learn from things like that.
