81 Honda CX650 stator and water pump seal – DIY.

#1 Unread post by koconno2 »

The following photos show the basic process to replace a stator and water pump seal on a 81 CX650.

The best way to replace a water pump seal on a CX engine is to remove the engine from the bike first. The water pump housing cover (not shown) is hard to remove. Be careful when prying the cover free because the cast edges of the cover break easy.

The water pump shaft seal (installed) was too large for the hole in the case. I had to have a machine shop bore out the hole for a proper press fit.

The other photos show the installation of the new (C47) stator from Electrex. This stator was not simple to install. It did not come with a complete harness.

The old stator must be cut free of the stock harness and the new stator soldered in place. Electrex instructions say you can just use the supplied crimp connects but that’s a farce. Their wire leads on the new stator were way too short so I need to solder in extensions for all six wires.

Then several trial fits into the case to make sure the new harness extension fits properly and will not come in contact with the spinning rotor shell/fly wheel.

In this last photo notice the raised nub in the casting next to the stator wire harness. If your new harness is resting on top of the nub it is very possible that the rotor will make contact with the wires after the rear case is installed. If this happens your whole repair is trashed after you crank the engine for the first time.
