'82 Maxim 650 issues

#1 Unread post by honda750 »

So I got this bike a while ago after sitting in this guys garage for about 10 yrs. The body is great since it was indoors, but I couldn't get it running. I took the carbs off and cleaned them thoroughly with Carb/choke cleaner and the air compressor, and when I started up the bike it ran like a champ. Now, though, it sat for 2-3 days before I could get back to it and it still starts right up, but it has NO power. It wants to die once you touch the throttle, and i cannot unchoke it completely (if i do it dies). When I first had it started, it idled nice for 3-4 secs, and the the throttle jumped up to 7000 rpm in a matter of seconds. I adjusted ethe idle speed a little bit and it seems to stay at a constant idle of 1050 rpm, which is what the book says it should be, but it still sometimes jumps up. The only way i can stop it is to unchoke it completely, but then it won't idle without being choked even after being comploetely warmed up. I have to presume the issue is in the carbs and I have to clean them again, but I just was ho-ping someone else might have had the same issue. Anyone????
