The wrap is supposed to turn black with use, I think.

it is kinda like what they use for casts, on a broken leg or arm. But it doesnt get as hard.

It's an insulating material. You can wrap an intake tube with it and the tube doesn't get as hot as it would within an engine bay of a car. I guess for a bike's exhaust it is so you don't burn the heck out of your leg.

Similar to ceramic coating, it helps carry heat out and away from the engine, helping it to run cooler.

I believe the purpose is for improved exaust gas flow. The theory is that hotter gases are less dense and therefore flow betterer. The tape insulates and keeps the heat focused into the pipe.

Be certain that the tape is what you want because when you remove it there could be damage to the finish of the pipe. If it's stainless you can sand off the residue and polish the pipe. If it's chrome it's likely that the chrome could be discolored.

It does look cool. If you like the look you can get it at Summit auto parts. They have a web site.

Its exhaust wrap. It is used for wrapping headers. Headers radiate ALOT of heat so to keep the heat down inside the engine compartment you wrap the headers with the stuff. Helps keep your engine cooler. Helps the intake by keeping the air cooler. Helps to "wick" the exhaust away from the engine quiker. It is made of fiberglass. Comes white. You get a can of spray stuff to turn it black.

Also makes it slightly less likely you'll burn the "poo poo" outta your hand if you accidently touch the pipe.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

OK you can take this for what its worth, and it might be total BS, but Russell Mitchell from "Build or Bust" said the wrap heats the exhaust and this heated exhaust somehow boosts HP as a result, so its not just for aesthetics.

It would be interesting to dyno the same bike with and without tape. If it does boost I would think it could not boost HP by much. Maybe it was originally a poor man's trick to boost HP.
