Front brakes Squeak.

#1 Unread post by Gilfy650a »

I was origionally going to post this in General, but decided a maintnence forum would probably be a better place.

My front brakes have been squeaking ever since my lowside last year. I was working on the bike the other day and had a buddy sit on the back of the bike to get the front wheel off the ground, and spun the wheel. It squeaked sure enough, I replaced the front pads last year and did not bleed the brakes afterward.

What do you all suggest to get the brakes to stop squeaking?

OK....Assuming that they are not worn out....what you do is remove the pads, take them over to some smooth concrete or perhaps black-top & rub them on the chosen surface in a figure 8 pattern. This will de-glaze them.

Refit & Hey Presto, no more squeaks....at least for a while.

Hmm, that would work for a short period of time, but when the pads are on the bike they touch the rotors ever so slightly so its just a matter of time before they glaze up again. :(

Try a different brand of Pad.

Maybe you should try feeding them?

And if they still don't shut up, scream at them, slap 'em across the head, and send them to bed.

Mine squeak too, but only when I am backing up, it is weird. They aren't binding, and they still have plenty of meat on them. I chalk it up to weird but not worth getting to upset about it.

Maybe the reason why it squeked because it needs a little lubrication. if it still squeaks, try providing a new one for your safety.

I thought that brakes and specficially brake pads were meant to provide friction... wouldn't lubing them sort of defeat the purpose of having them?
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
