Is there a way to move metadata from files into a db ... like into access or something?

I.E. If I want to pull up the metadata "properties" for all of the files in a folder for the purpose of cataloging, (at least into some kind of raw text cut-n-paste format) how would I go about doing that?

Caveat - I can't use any shareware or outside software.

Any Ideas where I could find out this info?

I know it's possible, I just couldn't tell you how. Try looking under the 'export' properties in the original program, then import it into access or whatever.

I could do this, but I've got about 20 gig worth of documents to go through. To export metadata for each document would literally take months.

Depending on the filetypes you can quite probably use a VBScript to do it - are you familiar with scripting or VBScript?

Here's a sample for pulling the ID3 metadata from .wma and .mp3 files:

Depending on what you want, there might already be a function that'll allow you to do this without another tool.

Windows SDK does have some tools that work with metadata - would MS tools be considered 3rd party for your purpose?

I do have SDK on my home computer, but I am not allowed to run ANY homemade scripts on my work computer.

I've been running up against brick walls with this, and I also have to extract a bunch (1.5 gig) of documents that have been saved as attachments to email files in Outlook. There are a few shareware programs to crawl through outlook and extract all attachments - But Nooo - I have to sort them extract them rename them and save them by hand.

Hence, a job that might take a few hours to write and run a script will now take literally months. The two jobs combined equal roughtly 20 gigs worth of documents.

I'm seriously thinking of quitting. I don't need this grief.

Why on earth are they so crazy about that? I'd probably quit under those circumstances too - that's a ridiculous request.

The company I work for gets paid something like $70 per hour just for me to work in that -yes, government- office.
