You have to take a plane or boat to get past the Darien Gap which is just South of the Panama Canal. There is only jungle and swamp for about 50 miles. The Pan-American Highway has yet to be constructed there.

I've been down to Mexico a few times. I mostly enjoy the mountains over the coast. It's a little cooler. Here's a good tip to remember when traveling through Mexico and central america. Keep your valuables well hidden. Carry 2 wallets, your regular wallet well hidden and an old second wallet with a few US dollar bills and a few peso, a couple of old expired credit cards, and an expired health card or driver license. A friend of mine that travels by bike in Mexico and South America every winter was stopped a couple of years ago a what he thought was a government check stop in the early evening. It turned out to be bandits. He had the 2 wallets on him and gave them the old wallet with about 15 single US dollars and a couple of expired credit cards in it. They took a quick look at the wallet and waved him on. As it turned out he lost very little and his travelers cheques, money, and credit cards were safe. Have a good trip when you go. Take care and ride safe.
