New to the scene..need help!

Hey Guys,
I just got my first bike this week..Suzuki GS500F '04. I love it. I'm having so much fun with it. Dont worry, I'm being safe and not stupid. Anyways, i was wondering if any of you experienced riders could tell me what I can do to make my bike louder. I can hardly hear it. And I'm sure other people cannot hear me either. Which, by the way, I am told that having people hear you is what can help them "see" you on the road. If by changing the exhast, will that make it louder? Or removing something from the exhast I have on it now? honestly, I would love to have it sound like a CBR or GSXr. My bike is a 2cilinder, so I know I cannot get it to sound great. Any suggestions?

hehe, my bad. I mean...in my opinion, great sounds like...an R1 or a GRX. I'm not even sure if just changing the exhast would fix that. Or do I need to do something else? Thanks.

In order to make it sound like an R1, you'll probably need to shop around and buy an R1. Here is a link that has sound clips of a bike like yours with a V&H exhaust. It definately isn't a screamer, but I like how it sounds.

The mere design of the cylinders has a bit to do with the sound produced. Vtwins like the Harleys you mention have a noticeabble note. Fuel delivery makes a difference, combustion characteristics, crankshaft profile, as well as exhaust/muffler design.

Your parallel twin will have different characteristics. If you want a slightly different sound, best bet is to change it with an exhaust system. Changing the shape and volume of the exhaust outlets with have an affect on the exhaust pressure wave. Your engine with have smoother balanced operation compared to Vtwins which means less vibration to be transferred into exhaust sounds.

While you can't really change the engine design (unless you buy a new bike or do custom work), you can change the exhaust. The variety of systems out there will give you a good selection to choose from. Just try to find the one you think you'll like.





I loved upgrading my exhaust system on my Chevy 350 - driving out of the shop after the change was fun!

see if the baffles are removable, if they are meant to be there should be a bolt near the end of the muffler..then check your plugs to make sure they stay brownish, if they get white then you would net to get bigger jets for the carbs (it has carbs right?! ) I pulled mine on my kz 400...same type of engine, definitely alot louder and unique sounding not like an I4 closer to a Duc but still not....most people say it sounds like a WWII bomber
