Girls and Helmets

I don't have a bike yet, but I'm looking. Built into my budget is a "spare" jacket and helmet for my girlfriend. It works out pretty well that all of the females I plan to have riding with me (girlfriend, sister, friend) are all about the same size.
I will have at least a spare helmet and gloves, and they might have to provide their own jackets.

I won't ride passengers. Simple as that. I've never liked the way any bike handled with a passenger. If she doesn't have her own bike, I'm not interested in riding with her. We'll take the cage. For those rare exceptional women of extraordinary intelligence, education, and wit who did not want to ride their own, I had a hack.

My wife & I rode 2-up for too many years. Now she has her own and the only time she rides with me is if hers breaks down, which so far is never.

That's a risky habit to allow. If you allow a passenger to go helmetless and an accident occurs, there's a potential him/her or the family can file a liability lawsuit against you. In today's society, people are lawsuit hungry. It's up to the driver to take responsibility for the passenger. I would require all my passengers to wear a helmet or they do not get to ride.

I'm with Meanie on this one. At least in the US, people manage to sue each other over just about anything. It would be very easy for the family members of an injured/deceased passenger to win a liable lawsuit against you. Helmets are not required in Ohio, but any passenger on my bike would have to wear one - for my protection. I also wouldn't take a passenger under the age of 18, no matter how much verbal permission I may receive from their parents. People change their attitudes when they lose a loved one. The same goes in my car - buckle up or no ride.

I guess an option would be to keep a stack of legal waivers on hand for passengers to sign... take it to a notary public for signature witness... not realistic, I know, but that's how nutty it all seems to be anymore.

People don't sue like that in Italy.

(Or the rest of the civilized world for that matter)

I guess I'll have to lose any semblance of common sense when I return to the States.

Oh yeah, and I won't be able to lane split either. I'm NEVER coming back

Lol, yeah, I know what you mean, I had a guy threaten to sue me at a stoplight because I "cut him off" (20 yards ahead) and caused him to "use unnecessary avoidance techniques). Read: I merged like everyone does around here, and he slammed on his brakes and chirped his tires getting into the next lane.

Make sure they have equal or better protection than you.

Helmet, gloves and jacket is the minimum. Pants and boots would be good to have also.

I don't plan on having another rider with me but since I'm poor and don't have another set I'd probably give them the gear off my back. Just ride with helmet and gloves because I value the health of my passenger more than I do my own. I could live with myself I were to get hurt but if my passenger were to get hurt I'd spend an eternity just blaming myself and feeling terrible.
