Haha, my dad always made me save 10% when I was younger, of course it always ended getting used for something (my dad actually had to use my savings on a couple of occasions). I never cared about brand name anything, especially clothes. The TV I'm referring to was used for $75.

I would say let your kid buy what he wants with his money (whether he saves any or not), but when he spends all his money on a tv, then asks you for some money to go to the movies or something, tell him no.

Thats good advice, cam. I agree, except that I think there are some things that need to be enforced to breed good habits, like saving. I have a certain rule that I save up to a certain amount from my 10% in a liquid savings account, when I hit that amount, anything over it goes into future investments. If I want to buy something I can dip into my liquid savings, but not unless it is up to the target balance. So the more I spend on my savings, the longer I have to wait until I can spend from it again.

Its good to teach kids how to hunt for bargains, too. I rarely buy anything new anymore...people these days just throw away or sell all sorts of things that are in perfect condition. Heck, I've got a $600 PDA that I paid a hundred bucks for because someone just upgraded to the newest gadget and the perfectly good device they had became worthless to them.

That makes sense, and I agree. My point was that after that happening a couple times to the kid, he'll realize the importance of saving (not only for a specific item, but simply to have money, should the need arise to use it), and start doing it. He'll realize he needs to keep a certain amount of money in savings most of the time, so if he decides to go to a movie or whatever, he'll have to money, because he knows you're not going to give it to him without good reason.

It's the same basic principle as what your do, just on a smaller scale. If he can keep a constant savings of say $100, then he'll have the $15 you need to go to the movies when he decides to. Then all his has to do, is the next time he gets some money (from yard work, allowance, christmas, whatever) put $15 back in.

But common. I didn't know what the hell "sexual" was. Everything sexual was monkey see monkey do. Boys weren't supposed to look up girls dresses, so it became a trill. Not because 8 year old boys are horns little basterds, but because it is a taboo.

Come on. Elementary school kids need to mess around and be kids. They're the same kids who think boys/girls have cooties and won't dare to even kiss each other or hold hands or declare they have a crush on someone.

Americans are obsessed with sex. Adults just think that every form of physical contact is perverted, and we're projecting on this to little kids who have absolutely no idea what we're really talking about. Remember the 6 year old who was suspended for sexual harassment for slapping a classmate on the butt? Nevermind that the girl started it! But this kid was freaked because he thought he was being arrested. Instead of teaching him to respect other peoples privacy and personal space, the 'principal' called it sexual harassment. The kid was probably traumatized by it, and I think the mom was trying to sue the school.
