For cold cold weather I usually wear.
t-shirt
long underwear shirt
long sleeved t-shirt
sweater
riding jacket with liner in
long underwear
fleece lined jeans
windproofs
two pairs of socks
those skinny stretchy gloves
heavy leather riding gloves
neck warmer
If it's really cold I get some of those chemical "heat pads" and put one on each hand and one on my chest. Roasty toasty the whole way. MMMM good.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I thought I was prepared for my first winter riding, but I overlooked neck protection. Anything to protect your neck from the wind will make a huge difference.
It seems like it's also difficult to find a balance between gloves that are warm, and those that give you some sort of feel for the controls. With my winter gloves on I can barely turn on my turn signal!

I just purchased one about a week or so ago for $5.00. GREAT PIECE OF GEAR!!!
Anytime it's under 50 now I have one on, it definitely keeps the wind off my neck and aids to keep my head warm (I wear a full face)
+1 to dressing in layers, including two pairs of socks. ;-p

Definetly not anything like your winter. But when you've been used to 100+ degree(38 celcius) weather for 4-5 months, weather in the 40s (4-5 celcius) seems pretty damn cold.
It gets below freezing here quite a bit during the winter. Like I said, it's not anything like Canada but cold nonetheless.

everyone always seems to forget about neck protection.
I use a fleece balaclava type thing as seen here:

if its especially cold i have another thinner balaclava that i wear under that.
