class or permit first?

#1 Unread post by black9 »

what do you think is a better idea to learn how to ride? getting my permit and practicing in my nabborhood or taking the motorcycle classes that get you the liceness? either way im going to take the class. and I have ridden a dirt bike recently for the first time so i do know how to switch gears and what not but never on a street bike :(

In my state, the license commissioner couldn't care less what classes you've taken, you still have to take their written test, so I went ahead and go my license before the class and stuck to parking lots. I was impatient and dropped the bike a couple times, but go ahead and check with your licensing office to see if the MSF class will get you out of their tests. Might save you a little hassle, eh?

Here in Ohio you have to have your permit to take the MSF class. Just go to a BMV, pay for the motorcycle packet, study the little book you get and take the written test when you're ready. Then sign up for the MSF. While I was waiting to get in on standby one guy had signed up for the class but never got his learners permit from the BMV. They sent him home when he went to sign into the class without his temps. That was nice for us standby folks cause it opened an extra spot :D

since these guys are pretty much givin ya all the info ya need ill help ya with the gears haha .... from top to bottom its like 1,N,2,3,4,5,6 (but neutral is more like a half gear kind of thing) and thats also known as the international shift pattern righto!
Have a good time ALL the time

If you haven't got your bike yet why not do both? I wasn't smart enough to get my BRC done before I bought my bike so I got the permit and have been putzing around with it until my BRC, which starts tomorrow. But if you don't have your bike, do both, get the permit, take the BRC using their bikes. In MN once you get your endorsement it's good until you remove it, so if you pass the BRC, get your endorsement then you can get your bike whenever.

I dont get it, neutral after 1st... and are all bike clutches the same (foot clutch, push it down, it shifts up, lift it up it shifts down) ??

Actually, it's bottom-to-top.

Clutch, lift up to shift up, release clutch.

Clutch, press down to shift down, release clutch.

And usually a single lift will get you from 1st to 2nd, but in the most embarassing moments you'll find you're winding up the throttle against a crankcase that's shifted to N instead...and then, in those times when you really want to be in neutral, you'll have a bear of a time finding it.

It's a totally dumb shift pattern to put on a safety-deprived system.

k wait, where the hell is the clutch? :oops:
I've ridden a sports bike, but just stesting it in first so didn't need to shift, and I dont own my first sports bike YET sorry, on my dirtbike it was just press it down and let the clutch go back and it shifted to 2nd, to 3rd etc, and to shift down... 3 to 2 to 1 whatever, I put my foot under the clutch, and slowly let off the gas and lifted up, is it the same with a sports bike?
