DIE CHEM!
DIE CHEM!
Anyone hate chemistry as much as I do?
I mean, I REALLY hate chemistry. I'm not a mentally challenged, but some of this stuff makes me want to take an akrapovic and beat myself over the head until it feels good.
Some reasons:
1. I'm a BIO major at UCLA
2. I need to take four quarters of chemistry, three of which are ORGANIC
3. I also need an upper division course in chemistry.
4. Did I mention I'm a BIO major???
It's only been a quarter, and I believe I am getting butt-raped to kingdom come. I just got an 80% on my midterm, which is the average. Anyone else feel my pain?

Oh man, wait until you get to Organic... it is a new meaning of pain and suffering. I took a class that combined chem 1 and 2 at the same time because I thought I was a Mr. Smarty pants... and it was actually no problem. Organic, however, is a different story.
There was only 1 person to get an A in that class... and it definitely wasn't me. Actually, it was my delightfully overachieving girlfriend. She was a bio major too. I didn't have to take Organic, being a Computer Engineer, so I dropped it. I just wanted it incase I decided to swap to nuclear engineering or chemical engineering or something. But that thought has passed.

Yes you are... I just dropped chem because I couldn't care about it enough to do anywhere near passing. And yes, I feel your pain. A couple of friends of mine are Biochem majors, they get a free minor in chem if they put in the paperwork, they don't even need to take any extra classes!JCViper528 wrote:Oh yeah, I'm currently in Organic chem, Quantitative Analysis, and Instrumental Chem... I'm not nuts, just need to graduate ASAP.

Yah chemistry and bio go hand in hand...
Just wait til you take Biochemistry.
I'm taking Ochem 1 this semester and will be taking the second ochem after that. Then I have to take biochemistry 1 and 2 (and the labs) followed by genetics (which I hear is chemistry intensive as well, knowing how all the nucleic acids bond together and the like).
Hurray me. Hurray Biomedical Sciences major.
Currently in Ochem we have to memorize about 25 different reactions, their mechanisms (how they actually form the product, not just this reactant plus this reagent in this solution forms this product, but have to draw out where each molecule is going, where all the elctrons are going, etc and so forth).
Aside from that, the first half of the first semester of Ochem isn't hard....

After missing the first two weeks of stoich, organic chem is the only thing that saved me from failing chem 20.
The 4 girls around me are the reason I got honors in chem 30, lol! Jeff how do I do this? How do I do that? Etc. Etc.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

I'm going into marine biology, something tells me I won't need to know "moles" or "wavelengths" or "lewis structures" to figure out that some whale coincides in a symbiotic relationship with feeder fish. Obviously there's a more microscopic level to it, but with the classes I'm taking it looks like a Chem Major with a minor in BIO.jonnythan wrote:Why would you be a biology major if you hate chemistry?
What do you expect to *do* as a bio major?
There is a reason they list Chem and Bio as two separate areas of study, afterall.
