I don't think the farmers need to be awake for the corn to get sun - the corn crops usually sleep outside

Ok - I'll be "the science guy" :P

The amount of light everyplace on earth is influenced by the tilt of the earth as it travels through oribit. Here in the northeast, we are actually tilted toward the sun, but in the orbital path, we are further away from the sun in winter, compared to summer.

I belive daylight savings was an act of congress, during FDR's administration. It may have been about the farmers originally - but now - I belive they keep it so the kids are out waiting for the bus, etc when it is lighter in the morning. I guess the feeling is most kids are home by 4:00 when it gets dark.

So, no matter what, "they" can't increase the AMOUNT of daylight, only the TIME at which it is lighter. To change the amount, "they" would have to change the angle of the earth.

I am positive some of you more computer savy folks could put up the diagram of the earth angle thing, etc!...

Still - I say HATE IT let's do away with it!

That's what I heard as well. I guess it was too complicated for the farmers to just wake up an hour later .

But back in the day when streetlights were uncommon and everyone lived in little rural towns, it made sense to adjust our time to the daylight. Easier than every store changing their hours, etc. There's little to no reduced functionality in modern cities during nighttime.

All it means is now I leave in the dark and get home in the dark. The only time I'll see my house in daylight in on the weekends.

I lived in AZ for a few years and didn't realize how nice it was not to have DST until I moved away and had to deal with it again.

Since the current congress isn't going to be accomplishing anything important anyway, maybe the could work on getting rid of DST...

actually no, the earth is CLOSEST to the sun during the winter, and at its farthest point away in the summer.

Wasn't there just that and fairly recently too (maybe spring '06) where there was talk about getting rid of DST in the U.S. and then the inevitable moaning and griping about all the work that would entail. At least I seem to recall the media here bemoaning something like that, like airline flights, stock exchanges, corporate work world...

Still, I don't like DST. There's a plus for Saskatchewan hey?
Ya right, there are only 2 kinds of bikes: It's a Ninja... look that one's a Harley... oh there's a Ninja... Harley...Ninja...

Why would it create more work? Just announce, "Hey, don't change your clocks anymore." Done
