Just curious after reading a recent set of posts if everyone would chime in on this little poll of mine and comment on the act. I'll add some comments myself later.

WHERE does the speed limit "increase"? Before the sign, at the sign, after the sign?

We have a SL of 35 mph in the village, that increases to 55 mph upon exiting. There is the sign that says "End of 35 mph" and subsequent signs that read "55 mph". I find, coming through the village, folks will climb on the back of my bumper/fender prior to gettng to the "end" or "55" sign. I usually do not increase to 55 till I GET to the sign. That's what the cop told me to do

And I generally don't ride fater than 65 on any roads, and try to maintain at least 70 on the 65 mph parkway. I do try to keep to the 30, 35, 40's as those are prime area to get tickets as they are residential...

On the highway I won't exceede the speed limit by more then 30. In town I'm at or within 10. Of course that's km/h rather then m/h.

depending on the conditions, i usually run between five and ten over the speed limit. neighborhoods, city is generally closer to five over - superslab is generally closer to ten.

a far as when the speed limit takes effect, my understanding is at the sign. in the situation where you have an "end" sp sign before the next posted sp sign, i would consider that zone the next posted sp.

If I saw a sign that read "End of XX speed limit" I would take that to mean that there is no speed limit and I can go as fast as I want. What does it mean?

I try to keep it no more than 5 over, but depending on traffic conditions it might sneak up a bit. I know I'm not even close to taking advantage of the potential of my bike, but I'm happy at cruising along.

I will drive 5 over, no more. Only if the rest of the traffic is speeding.

I always thought that the point of the speed limit sign is when the speed changes. Therefore if I am traveling 60mph and I see a speed limit sign for 45, I need to reduce my speed to 45 by the time I pass that sign. If I am going 45 and see a 60mph sign, I need to maintain 45 until I reach the sign, then increase my speed to 60.

I'll adjust depending on conditions.

In a residential neighborhood i'll go exceptionally slow. My bike is loud enough, and I dont want to "pee" anyone off.

On the highway I'll stay with traffic, or speed as appropriate to get away from it. For example, I'm not comfortable riding next to an 18 wheeler, so I'll speed up to get past it.


If the conditions of the road allow me to, I'll go over the speed limit sometimes, just because thats part of the fun of riding a bike. taking corners at speed.

Well, some states are best experienced in as little time as possible, such as Kansas. Too bad there are no corners there though.
