KZ400H regulator problems(newbie?)

#1 Unread post by wolfe 21 »

I recently got a 79 KZ400H from a friend that isn't running. Seems he tried to use a battery charger on it and hooked the cables up backwards. Long story short, rectifier/regulator is fried. My problem is finding another regulator. I have an SH221-12 that I have been able to find several examples of, but there are also two little numbers to the bottom right, on mine its 9.1, that I can't find a match for. Does anyone know what these numbers mean, and can I use another SH221-12 with different numbers such as 8.8 or 4.4 or ....
Also, do you think the wiring harness needs to be replaced along with the regulator or will it still be serviceable. It's the original part as far as I know. Thanks for any help, James.

As far as the harness goes, check over the insulation and the connections. If you don't find any burnt or cracked wires, the old harness should be usable.

For specific info on the reg/rec, I highly recommend a visit to Odd Ivar's site at http://www.kz400.com/index.html If the technical pages don't have what you're looking for (they have a vast amount of tech data), check in on the forums. Reg/rec replacements are often a hot topic there.

Good luck. I had a '76 KZ400 as my first bike and it was a great machine.
