Aside from the possibility of correcting problems in women who cannot give birth, I wonder how far this will go should it become a more routine procedure such as the heart transplant today.

How long will it be until the first man gives birth via cessarian section with a transplanted womb?

I'm sorry - I'll probably get blasted by somebody within seconds, but... why, why, why do we feel it necessary to mess around with fate. There are plenty of babies to adopt (PLENTY!), there are plenty of willing participants for surrogate pregnancies... I just don't get it. I know it's easy for me to say; I was easily able to get pregnant and had two easygoing pregnancies/births, but really! I still maintain that if I hadn't been able to get pregnant for any reason, then fine... I would either adopt or just become the best "auntie" to the children of my friends.

And what a waste of good scientific resourses/money when we have much more important medical issues that could use our attention.

The first time I read this post I didn't reply, not real sure what to think. For somereason I feel there's some kind of ethical aura floating about it. But looking at it scientifically or medically, it is an organ, like a heart or liver. I'm not real sure what to think.

Its kind of like my thoughts on stem cell research. A lot of the arguments against it because of the embryos. I believe life starts with an embryo, not the "first breath" out of the womb. But on the other side, there is me, a person with some CNS damage who could use stem cell research, and ultimately possibly have my arm back.

Eh, I don't know, no real thoughts either way on either issue. I guess its unamerican of me to just sit back and not decide who's side to take. There will be plenty of arguments and thoughts to go eother way, my 2cents really wouldn't matter.

Just a fyi, but embryonic stem-cell reserch isn't the only stem-cell research going on. There are adult stem-cell research and umbilical cord stem-cell research. Both of those are providing good results, unlike embryonic stem-cell research. Not flaming you or anything, but most people think embryonic stem-cell research is the only type going on, so I thought I'd throw that out there.

Yes, it is interesting, but I'm with Loonette on this. There is greater need in other places and the procedure still doesn't guarantee a pregnancy.

A lot of research is performed by or on behalf of Private Companies whose primary responcibility is to be profitable to their shareholders...

End of the day the research will get done where it is most valuble, which is fairly regulary not where it is most needed.

Well that's easy Loonette. People want it to be their own flesh and blood. Adopted babies are foreign. They're not your kid, not technically. Do they deserve the same amount of love and affection? Hell yes. But that's not the mind set a lot of people have unfortunately. They want their own kid.

I realize that a lot of people want only their own flesh and blood baby - that's why mountains of money get poured into fertility procedures every day. FOR ME, however, I would not have any desire to subject myself to major surgery or to highly invasive procedures in order to create another baby when there are plenty available already. If my goods were somehow defective, I would accept that in myself and move on.

And while a uterus is an organ (and a fabulous one at that!), it's isn't one on which our lives depend.

I have no doubt that, in the name of science , people will go on creating all sorts of new techniques for correcting our imperfections. If a uterine transplant is something that somebody else feels would bring happiness to their life, then great - doesn't bother me. I was just stating that it wouldn't be right for me and that I don't agree with the emotional based logic behind it.

I agree with Loonette. My disclaimer is that I don't have any kids, and never had any desire to have any of my own. Think if they put all that "medical research money" into feeding and educating "throw away" kids in the USA...

Just because I don't have any, doesn't mean I don't know what it is to raise them. But I see ALOT of women who CAN and DO have a TON of kids, and have no interest in making them good, smart, kind people. Alot of women are all "goo goo ga ga" over a BABY, then make them their little slave once they are 4 or 5. Or basically forget all about them once they have their own minds and misbehave....I have heard so many women say they want another (and already have 2 or 3) because they love babies, how babies are, how good babie are.

People should be out to raise good adults, not be all goo goo over the romantic idea of a baby.
