But, I do think cell phones are a nice thing to have. I can call my gf on my lunch break, and ask her how her test was. Or let her know I'm going to be talking to somebody about buying my car, so I'll be late for dinner (both of these happened today.

Yep.

I like the potential of always being in contact, but using it sparingly. Very very sparingly for me. I don't do the whole yak yak yak thing on the phone. On here i'm a blabbermouth. On the phone its, Heres information piece A. do you have any information for me? No? Goodbye.

I almost always answer my phone. I know what the situation is with the person I am with, I do not know what the situation is with the person who is calling/texting.

Generally though I will wait until there is a lull in the conversation - bathroom break etc to check my messages.

I have no problem with saying excuse me to my company to check with the phone, if the call isnt important I explain I am with someone same as I do with the home phone.

The thing I don't get is people who answer their phone when they are on the toilet. At least wash up first guys. :(

At work, our rest room is down the hall, and we share with other building tenants. Often, I hear ladies in the stall speaking on their phone. I don't know if they only get so many breaks and they multi task, or is it's clandestine. At first, I thought they were speaking to me, then I thought they were talking to themselves...

But it is still that "yeah, I had burger king for lunch..." or "I'm so tired" conversation.

I do think alot of "cheking in" is done these days for kids are home alone, threat of accidents on the road. I also think many people are still flipped out about 9/11 and want to keep in touch "in case"...

Yes, especially when they CALL people while on the toilet. And they always say "What ya doing?" and when asked they say "Oh, nothing."

Makes you want to scream "He's calling you from the john!" and then run out

Heh....I admit that I sometimes talk to people when I'm on the crapper. But, I mainly do it because I like to be alone when I'm talking on the phone. If someone is in the same room as me I leave and go somewhere vacant. I won't, however, interrupt a real-world conversation to answer my phone; if it's important they'll leave a message.

**Edit: I should note that when I do talk in the bathroom...it's my own bathroom; not a public one. I feel like messing with the people who talk in public ones. (cherrybomb in the toilet anyone? )

If someone takes a call while I'm in the bathroom, the toilet immediately is flushed continuously until they leave or hang up. I hate that bullcrap.

Oh now, I'm sure you can come up with some more entertaining sound effects for the offender than that

I think it makes them feel important.
Yep, you nailed it. the narcissism thing is tops on the list. much of our society has less humility, respect and consideration with each passing generation, replaced with more selfishness and toys. but there's always some people with healthier core values out there, just in different places, different careers, different lives than the masses.

No need to scream that. they find out I'm calling from the john when I flush.

I bless the cell phone.

If not for them, I wouldn't be able to rid myself of unwanted face to face conversations with someone. Now I can say, oh gotta take this call.

I wouldn't have games to play while sitting through school plays and recitals.

I wouldn't be able to text on those commutes home from work.

I curse the cell phone.

Being an System Administrator, I get calls all the time when there are problems with computers at work.
