More Bikers Riding Without Licences, Says RTD

DUNGUN, Dec 17 (Bernama) -- Many motorcyclists are riding without the Lesen Kenderaan Motor (LKM) or motorcycle licence although the fee is only RM2, Road Transport Department (RTD) director general Ahmad Mustaffa Abd Rashid said Sunday.

He said an increasing number of motorcyclists refused to pay their licence fee.

"This trend is becoming more serious," he told reporters after attending the RTD's gathering with the people at Sekolah Menengah Teknik Dungun here. He, however, did not provide any figures to support his statement.

"We are not so concerned about the RM2 fee but the life of the motorcyclists and the pillion riders. They are not covered by insurance if the LKM is not paid," he said.

Since Sept 12, 2005, the annual LKM fee for motorcycles of below 150cc is RM2 while superbikes with engine capacity of 151cc to 250cc was reduced by 50 per cent from the existing rate.

Ahmad Mustaffa, who helmed the RTD on Dec 3, said severe action would be taken against those caught without a valid LKM.
