I was 16. My dad wouldn't buy me a bike so I used a Honda 50 from one friend and a Yamaha 80 from another.
I'll never forget the ad I saw in Time Magazine. This was in 1963 or 64. A full profile of a red Honda 50. In large, bold letters underneith it, the price read $285.00. I never wanted anything so much in my young life.
Now I have a V-Star 650 Custom and a Honda Rebel (for quick juants around the neighborhood).
By the way, I haven't dropped a bike in 40 years.
Because of a heart murmer I couldn't get a private pilot's license. The motorcycle comes real close in thrills.
Be safe everyone,
L.R.

first riding
I was 11 .with my first bike Motograziella 49 cc.

10 years old on my first dirt bike. Rode and raced them till I was 19. Didn't ride again till I was 26 and rode a dirt bike for one year, then went to sport ATV's. Gave that up after three years and went to 4x4 ATV's. Still ride those. Just bought my first street bike this summer at 43. I'm now obsessed with street bikes (retro cruisers) more than anything. My wife says I love it more than her. I just tell her I'm going through my mid-life crisis.

growing up bikes were taboo in my family. After H.S. graduation joined the Army, went to Germany (1979) and got my first bike, an old '68 Norton 650. Damn near killed myself (18 and autobahn don't mix). I learned fast, and have never quit riding. Now I have a 13 year old son, he rode on his first bike at a year old (on the back). I've taught him to respect the machine and its capabilities as well as his own. Hopefully he won't make the same rookie mistakes I made, because nobody taught me a thing. Now all he wants to do is race a bike professionally, and I'm behind him all the way!
