Hey, Michigan (north of Detroit/Flint/Saginaw) is WAYYYYYYY better than Indiana on the I-65 corridor. Prettier, too.jfeaz wrote:i'd expand that to anywhere in michigansportsterideragogo wrote:Ride on pretty much any highway or major road anywhere near Detroit...It will give you a new appreciation for the term 'dangerous'. Poorly maintained, complete with giant tire swallowing potholes, expansion cracks that have definitly 'expanded', and a lovely assortment of: retread 'speed bumps', roadkill, and the usual urban hellhole road hazards.

I just did a cross country (USA) solo ride and I can say that Interstate 40 from Memphis over the Mississippi River all the way to Little Rock is a real drag in both directions. Trucks are as thick as cattle. The lanes are narrow, shoulders thin and there is no where to go if you are in trouble but the dirt fields. The dust, air turbulence and pushy traffic make it quite tiring and dangerous. You can be aggresive and live, or stay in your lane and get blown away and run over. I got off the Interstate and enjoyed the rest of Arkansas just fine.

also cars cut corners.. I am guilty of that to....( when i am in a car..)Chick wrote:There is a road between Santa Maria and Lompoc, Called Harris Grade. Great twisties, but between squids and idiots in their hopped up encon boxes going a lot faster than the road and their skills allow, there are a lot of head on fatals up there. Not a good place for bikes.
they some times go off their lane to keep the speed and cut corners

Deerfoot 500
You have that right Mike. When I lived in Calgary we use to call the Deerfoot Trail the Deerfoot 500. It seemed more like driving in a bump and grind NASCAR event.totalmotorcycle wrote:For those of us in Calgary, I have to say our #1 most dangerous road to ride would be Hwy #2 (Deerfoot).
100km/h limit in the city, 110km/h limit outside the city, but the speed limits only seem like guidelines to the majority of drivers on the Deerfoot. 10-20km over the speed limit is required just to stay with traffic and some drivers are going 30+km/h over.
Also it doesn't help the cagers drive like madmen on the Deerfoot and that the pavement badly needs replacing to boot!
Mike.

New jersey has some pretty bad roads. Mostly in the densely populated northeastern part of the state.
Route 1&9 - leads state in accident fatalities according to statistics.
Jersey Turnpike (I-95)- tons of big trucks and most people tear down the road at 80-90mph.
Rt. 46 in passaic county. Been under construction for years now and lots of dangerous merges and stupid drivers.
Rt. 22 in union county. Insanely crowded and heavy merges on both sides of the road. A freakin nightmare.
Rt. 21 in essex/passaic county. Short highway with lots of dangerous curves and dips in the pavement. Easy to lose control it if you are going too fast. Crashes frequent.
The Garden State Parkway actually isnt too bad. Its usually crowded but trucks arent allowed to travel on it which is a big plus.

In my very brief travels, I honestly believe that on the whole, Calgary offers the universe the greatest number of incompetently dangerous drivers anywhere.Rydr wrote:You have that right Mike. It's not NEAR as bad as the worst roads, but because I've seen it listed as a scenic route in motorcycle specific websites, I'm putting in hwy 49 in Northern CA. Don't be afraid to ride it, but be very careful of people pulling out left from both sides without seeing motorcyclists.
The mix of old senile people ("whrrrat's happening george? ooo look I cut hhhim offff") to redneck people (yeeehaaa bubba! brumblebrumbleburmble) and hippies (free yourself from your body, minimum and maximum speed limits, and society's need to drive on a certain side of the road) - can be hazardous.

Highway 225 runs from the refineries and chemical plants along the Houston ship channel to the container terminal at Barbour's Cut. It is wall to wall with 18 wheelers Monday through Friday. There is also huge pot holes and the assorted debris dropped by the various trucks. It is a good road to stay off of.
