The stateside CB is more like a cruiser than the CB the rest of us know and love.

Exactly. You named "a few" because there are very few of them. Everyone makes standards, but how many can you pick from? Maybe 1 or 2 models? 3 at the most; While making 8 to 10 models of cruisers and sportbikes.

If you consider the same bike with a different engine size or a sticker here and a saddlebag there a new model, then there are "plenty" of cruisers to choose from.

I was thinking CB250, which is a very different animal to the CB250 that appears in the rest of the world...

Standards havent disappeared completely, they just arent being shipped to the US that much... Although to ba fair Honda are the only manufactuer supplying a good range of standard class bikes to the UK still. Honda UK Standards available New today...
