Rollin' down the Highway

#1 Unread post by CentralOzzy »

A while back my Mate & I had 2 similar Harley's, both were Heritage Softails.
We loved to get away for rides on long weekends from Melbourne Victoria, over the border to N.S.W. sometimes Via The capitol of OZ, Canberra, to the Kosciusko National Park.

Mt Kosciusko is our highest mountain in OZ & therefore there are a lot of wicked windy roads to get into.

When we'd finally make it to the top of the mountain we'd stop, kill our engines then push our bikes in a 'Le Mans' type start, running fast beside them, hop on then race each other down the steep roads using drafting techniques to gain the advantage over each other....this roll race lasted about 30-40 mins. so what it came down to was the person who used there brakes the least & drafted with the best efficiency WON!! Because there was no noise to speak of you could yell insults to each other hoping to demoralize him into making a mistake....Talk about laugh!

I did that once, but on a bicycle. It ended bad for me, but I won.

Broken bike, lots of road rash, and the embarassment of the cutest girl in school watching the whole thing.

Bummer about that Toyuzu, but it does happen to most blokes at one time or another.

Looks like no-one else has tried Roll Races, so that makes me think that I'm all on my lonesome on this score....*SIGH*

Oh well.

Not so fast, there, Oz.

Back in the early 70s, a pal of mine and I got in the habit of roll-racing down a local mountain road that drops maybe 2000 feet in around six miles. Some of the switchbacks on this particular two-lane are so tight you'd think you could see your own tail-lights. I still ride there on occasion when the hooligan bug bites me but I quit racing down it long ago. There's usually some sand at the edges of the pavement so, predictably, we each suffered our first low-sides there.
Let me get this straight... it's one down and four up, right?

Being as that Michigan has no natural mountains, the best I can hope for is to find a really, really big hill.

Not likely to happen, though. :(
