Today I went for a ride with a few members of a club to which I belong.
It was the 2nd annual Polar Bear Ride/Swim. Dr.Bar invited himself to join us. He doesn't usually like group rides, but I guess seeing the spectacle of popsicle people was enough of a lure for him to join the ride today.
We met at the usual meeting place, and then the 5 bikes and 1 car made our way in the pouring rain to the beach where the swim was taking place.
Now I may be brave in some things like riding my bike all the way to San Francisco and back, but jumping into a cold ocean on New years Day is not on my list of things to do beofre I die.
Three of our members did go fir a dip though.
We then rode through White Rock to go for lunch and a few laughs before riding home our separate ways.
The ride was good, but it sure was wet and cold out today.
The crate story coming up soon. The Christmas season got so busy, I had no time to sit and write.

We are finally having winter here in Vancouver. 
I suspect it's going to be an ugly commute today.
As seen yesterday.....
Some of you may have heard about the BC Place Stadium roof collapse. The downtown skyline sure does look naked where the big white dome was.
Here is a picture looking toward Terry Fox Plaza. There should be a big white dome above the concrete.
I often read disparaging comments made about scooter riders. Some of them are either very foolish or very brave. Given the conditions yesterday, I was very surprised to see a scooter rider pass me on the road.
I suppose because they are so low to the ground, can't go very fast, and the scooter isn't very heavy that if they fall over, not much will happen.
It's supposed to be sunny today so I'm packing my cameras with me today.
There were so many collisions yesterday; and guys out in their sporty cars with high performance tires trying to get up slippery hilly roads.

There are varying stories as to why the dome collapsed. The one that is floating around and which is probably true ( the manger is denying though), is that the manager wouldn't order the steam to be turned on to heat the the roof.
The dome was made of a teflon material and was kept inflated by fans. There is a system that can be used to heat in between the layers so that snow and ice would not accumulate.
On this particular day, it had snowed and blowed....We have been having extreme wind storms with wind blowing up to 60 mph. The weight of the ice,rain and snow and the extreme winds cause a big rip in a panel of the roof. It started to collapse, so the workers began a "controlled" collapse so that nobody got hurt and damage was minimal.
A new panel has now been delivered, but yesterday was the first day the workers could safely work on it. It was sunny and not windy yesterday and today.

So the real word is that there was a small tear detected, and a worker went to turn on an extra fan to help keep the roof inflated when he noticed the score board starting to get lower. At the same time, another worker had just turned on six fans and between the two of them, they over inflated the roof causing a panel to blow out. It was then that they started the controlled whoopee cushion effect....

The ice has melted
I went for a ride
On two steel belted
It stalled and sputtered
As I cursed and mumbled
But with a twist and a tweak
The V-Twin rumbled
I rode out of the garage
And onto the street
To ride to the club
For the weekly meet
The roads were dry
The skies so clear
It was the best day to ride
So far this year
It felt so freeing
To get back on the bike
And go for a ride
Into the night.
OK, OK, so, I'm no poet.
I got to go for a ride on Thursday night.
The weather has cleared and warmed for a few days. I was not the only person to get a bike out. With the sudden change and sunshine, plenty of bikers are out.
I will be riding to the Vancouver Motorcycle show tomorrow (along with my pal). Bikers get primo parking.
I hope to find some new tires at show prices and maybe I can find the helmet I like.
It should be a good day.
