Why does motorcycle design revolve around the engine?

About 1 1/2 yrs. ago I was looking for my first bike (small cruiser) and did quite a bit of research on the web. I gleaned the following 1/4 mile times from the Motorcycle Cruiser Mag. website.

Harley
883R 15.63
883 14.77

Honda
Ace 750 15.56
Spirit 750 14.83
VLX 600 16.42

Suzuki
Intruder 800 13.74
Marauder 800 14.46
Volusia 800 15.34
C50 15.64
M50 15.49

Yamaha
Virago 750 13.77
Classic 650 15.91
Custom 650 15.48

Kawasaki
Vulcan 500 15.03
Vulcan 750 13.98
Classic 800 14.34
Custom 800 14.00
Drifter 800 14.56

Granted that these times were achieved on different model year bikes at different times and probably by different riders, I still think that they are a reasonable indication of each bike's performance. As you can see the Vulcan 500 holds up quite well.

Can you guess which bike I bought?
I always follow the rules.
The only exception to the rule occurs when I make an exception to the rule not to make an exception to the rule and that only occurs under exceptional circumstances.

I likes my Red Vulcan. I dont really have anything to really compare it oo (my 82 Yammy 400 wasnt really in the same ballpark.....or game for that matter) Its pretty comfy and has enough snot for me to get around.
