Fear the high side
Hey all I'm back. After a long vacation from the site I got a fun story you all will like. I live in mid missouri and the lake of the Ozarks are about an hour away. I found a road down there when i was learning to ride 2 years ago, but i didnt ride it hard cause i wasnt ready and I was on my vulcan, not the twisty ride of choice.
About october of last year I went out looking for this road again. Only this time I was on the Hurricane , which I am now most comfortable on. If anyone knows About lake roads, they are full of turns. this one has excess of 30 within about 5 to 10 miles. It sweet. It gets your blood going as soon as you start down it. ANd its smooth as heck! So Im flying around these corners. Average speed is about 65 or 70. Hitting about 80 on the straights and dropping to 55 on most corners. I followed the road all the way to its end and then turned around to head home. I rode the same the whole way back until I got distracted. I saw some people on my left as I came out of a right hand turn. Again I was going pretty fast.
I looked at them for a split second and when My eyes cought the road I was going 75 or 80 mph looking down the mouth of a 45 mile and hour left hand turn. I hit the brakes and locked the back tire. My rear tire started sliding out, as though lining up for the turn. I kept my composure and without freaking out, I slowed and straightened the bike back to vertical and let off the back brake. Thats when the traction grab gave my butt a little wiggle as I continued around the corner at about 45. I thought for a second " awe Man I couldn've gone down!" But then I was LIke" AW YEA That was AWESOME!!!! I continued to ride with the same pace the whole way home and then some. Target fixation was on of the hardest things to NOT DO. Once I shook the ditch out of my vision I could concetrate on what the bike was doing and I kept it from leaning too far and possibly high siding. It was an eye opener and a confidence booster. Just wanted to hit you guys with some experience I've had this past year.

I went out riding today on a random twisty northern california road in the mountains. I thought I was ditch-bound when I went too fast into a turn that was an increasing grade, decreasing radius gravel filled turn with a funky merge section coming in. I think I just hit the brakes a bit and was able to slow down enough in the beginning of the turn, so I made it. I gotta be more careful.

I was on a short random road just outside of Chico. I haven't really explored much since I just got a bike here last week, but I'm looking forward to exploring roads in between Chico and Lake Almanor and beyond. Let me know of places you like too - I've never been up hwy 20 or to tahoe, or done hwy 1.Locopez wrote:Where was this? I live up in Redding....great riding up in Northern Cal....I like going out the Ditch Grade...from 273 to Platina...I think it is A16 or something...I really dig on 299 to the coast as well...and well just about any direction from Redding except south because it is to straight of roads that way.
