Used 2001 750 Vulcan

#1 Unread post by Bubba »

A buddy is looking at a used (13000 miles) 2001 750 Kawai Vulcan. Assuming in good shape. The dealer is asking $3500. We checked the trade in value at Kelly Blue Book at $2600.
The questions: What do you guys think of this bike? Buddy is kind of cheep so he wants something that will be reliable.
Does $3500 seem like a reasonable price? He probably could get it cheeper from a private sale, but who's selling one? :)
Any alternatives in this price range?

a 750 vulcan is an extremely dependable machine.

a quick search on cycle trader shows 99's going for 2300, and everything after ging for at least 3 so the price is in line.
Dyin'? Boy, he can have this little life any time he wants to. Do ya hear that? Are ya hearin' it? Come on. You're welcome to it, ol' timer. Let me know you're up there. Come on. Love me, hate me, kill me, anything. Just let me know it.

The bike is a good one, and has many features (introduced years ago ahead of its time) that compare well with bikes today. The stock seat is notoriously uncomfortable. However, considering that Kawi will be ending the V-750 line this year (that's what I hear), it will be an orphan bike, but its been around for so long that parts should be plentiful. Also, a new V-750 costs no more than about $6000 and somebody should be able to get a new one for less.

I like the vulcan 750...its got some great features. Hydraulic lifters so no valve adjustments, full instrumentation including a tach, fuel gauge, temp gauge, and loads of idiot lights, dual disc front brake, shaft drive etc. And supposedly its a pretty quick bike for a crusier.

However ive heard of some developing issues with the stator/electrical system. Although that may just be the older ones. The bike has been around for like 20 years.

I own a 750 vulcan, it is maintenance free except for oil changes. Self adj. valves, self adj. can chain, and drive shaft no adj. needed. Claims 66 horses at 7500 rpm. Gas gauge rear air shocks. about 5,000 rpm at 70 mph. I bought it used did have to replace the cam chain adj. at about 15,000 miles. I would consider replacing it with a 920 virago.
