Info on 2 bikes

I would pick the Vulcan 900 over the VTX 1300 simply because it's almost 100 pound lighter. VTX weighs 641 lbs dry. That's a lot of weight for a first bike - gives you very little margin of error for newbie mistakes.

most Kawasaki's don't have many problems if they are maintained the right way, Kawasaki is made cheaper compaired to Honda and Yamaha, they use cheaper and lower quality parts such as brake calipers, wheels, suspension, clutch handles and so on, and thats the reason why the Kawasaki bikes are less expensive to buy, to an experienced biker riding it he can feel the difference in quality, don't get me wrong, that 900 Vulcan is a good bike, they made it the right way and its a great bike for the money, you will never find a bike its size and all the features for the money. I just see a big difference in bikes that guys neglect and abuse by never changing the oil and not doing any manitance and some brands of bikes can hold up and handle that with no problems, but owning a Suzuki or Kawasaki you will never get away with it, just make sure you do the required service on ur Kawasaki and you should be ok. Yeah, now that you mention it I notice a HUGE difference in the clutch handles. I mean it's not like they are saving huge costs on R&D and retooling by not changing popular lines of bikes...

Of course, we all know that Moto is the expert on that second point. If you abuse and never maintain your bike then you'll have some problems.
