Brits, Leafsprings, WWII, and Nationalism, & retardisms

#1 Unread post by The549 »

I watch that car show Top Gear on the BBC. Have you ever seen it? If not, and if you like european/car stuff/stunts, you should check it out, because it's very entertaining. Find some clips on youtube. I just finished watching all of season 9 on DVD, and find their passion for cars, goofiness, and relentless anti American and anti motorcycle jokes very funny.

Now,
I live in the best country in the world, which is the USA. I believe that this country has the most potential regardless of a 5hitstained history and tense foreign relations. But really, that's just my opinion, and it has nothing to do with the point of this rant. Except that I would expect that many people would have similar feelings for their own country.

My real point is this: I find all those anti American and anti US jokes on the show to be hilarious, and have no problem sitting on my fat American a55 watching them berate my peoples' cars while I eat a hamburger. It's entertaining, and I'm also very safe here in my cozy California apartment. The problem was this: I was explaining this whole thing to a friend of mine (one of those Limbagh sheeple who says they don't like republicans because they're too liberal, but votes party lines - no accusations of right and wrong here....). He is very intelligent, so as I was ranting on people who still argue like children over which country did more in WWII and those who are serious (rather than joking) when they berate another country, I was surprised and very disappointed to hear him go off about English people.

He educated me:
-English people are rude (that's what they say about us!)
-They think we are pigs
-They think their country is better than ours, which is obviously wrong
-Their country is just a small pathetic button of a thing on a huge planet
-They oppress people ( )
-THEIR cars suck (no, YOU'RE stupid!#$)

Rather than write out a conclusion, I'm gonna let my emotions flesh out the end:

To the english and american bickerers: World War 2! WE WON!! GET OVER IT!! The GOOD side won, and the bad side lost, and really (contrary to many popular current fiction books), it's unlikely that things would have happened otherwise regardless of details. Lots of people died, many who would still be living and there was a tragic loss of life. But the US and the Brits were on the SAME goddamned side, and that's really how we got it done.
PATRIOTISM IS GOOD, NATIONALISM IS BAD!! AMERICAN CARS MAY NOT BE AS GOOD AS EUROPEAN CARS BUT THEIR PRICE USUALLY JUSTIFIES IT!!!

It's incredibly easy to be put on the defensive of your country when being pecked on by ignorant natives of other countries when you visit ("your country does this and this wrong" etc etc...not realizing many people don't support those acts), but for someone to have such ingrained and unjoking beliefs about the measurable ineptitude and superiority of a country is pathetic in this day and age.

For the love of God, I really thought that we were good enough to joke with one another. But I'm serious.

Europe usually gets the better version of cars that the US cannot seem to get.

Certain smaller displacement bikes are available over there, A 155 mph Impreza is available over there... I can't remember the name, even American car companies make certain models available over there that are good while the US gets the bigger is best series of cars.

You should try it from a Canadian perspective some time.

Generally speaking the retired brits we get down where I live are real world class a**holes. But the ones in their 20's and 30's seem nice enough and I've even heard them complain about the retired brits in their tour groups.

The older brits just seem to have this drive to insult everyone. No matter what the original conversation was about they always seem to twist it around to talk about British superiority or what they don't like about other countries. Like they're doing mexico a favor by retiring there and everyone should bend over backwards to accommodate them. Granted the last part happens with some the Americans and Canadians but it's almost never as blatant.
I'm starting a petition to cull narrowminded dull people - be afraid Peter, be very afraid....

So true. I'll admit, I love America. I'm glad I live here, I really am. Sure, I may not agree with all of the actions of my leaders, or even my fellow citizens, but I still like this country. Do I want to visit other coutnries? You bet your "O Ring" I do. Would I consider MOVING to another country? Hell's yes. England, Canada, and Italy are on the short list for countries I'd like to live in some day.

And Top Gear, is AMAZING. One of the funniest shows on TV in the world.

Reflash an STi, it'll hit 155... Or should, if a re-flashed stage 1 WRX can hit 140 mph.

Hah - that's no better than anywhere else I've been. ;) When I lived in Vancouver, at *least* once a day I would have to listen to people berate America/Americans, and then turn to me and go "but not you, you're OK." Like sweeping generalizations are OK as long as you say something like that. Heh.

At first it made me feel defensive, then I just started ignoring it. Sometimes I'd tease them (depending on who it was, and if I thought they could take it) about Canadians having a chip on their shoulders..or the typical american/canadian rivalry stuff (oh, Canada, you're so cute when you're angry! Whose a cute little country!) - but it was really a crapshoot whether or not you could really talk about things like that with folks there. Most of the time it would be just like the discussion the original poster had - it would turn into "No Canada is always better no matter what" even if you were just talking about differences that you liked or didn't like and weren't trying to discuss where is better.

So in my experience, Canadian nationalism is as bad as US nationalism. Americans and Canadians are way more alike than most of them will ever admit. With a few exceptions, living in Vancouver really wasn't any different than living in a US city.

That was BC though, and I saw more demonstrations about American politics there in Vancouver than anywhere in the States. I didn't have the heart to remind them that they couldn't vote so they were getting all riled up with nowhere to put the energy.

I have a hard time listening to anyone saying their country is "the best" - especially when they've only ever lived in their own country. How do you know unless you experience living in others?

Personally, I really don't think any one country is better than others anymore than one particular brand of car or bike is better. It all depends on you and what you need. I love living here in the US but there are a lot of pretty f'd up things here. Vancouver was pretty great too - but there was also a heck of a lot of f'd up there. I know I wouldn't like living in England for a long time after an extended stay there. I couldn't get used to everything except pubs/clubs shutting down so early (outside of London anyway). I love the convenience of North America too much.

It means to re-program your existing chip with new data.

bingo.

With subies it can be done with a laptop and a $90 cable. There's FREE open source software for changing and monitoring fuel and turbo mapping. A stage 1 nets around 20 AWHP over stock. That's a short ram intake and a re-flash. Also removed top speed limitor.
