Well, I'm the holier-than-thou t-shirt virgin round here. I had my first big crash pretty soon after getting my licence so I learned my lesson early. I never ride in anything other than full gear, even if I'm just going 300 yards to the nearest supermarket. A bit boring, but I like my skin.

A work colleague's son lost his legs at 20 mph on a roundabout that he rode daily.

I also have a friend who is a casualty nurse and she has told me enough gruesome stories about the mangled bodies of inadequately kitted up bikers to last me a lifetime. A big no thanks to the t-shirt and trainers gang.

55km/h and braking wearing canvas pants...

I now wear leather chaps EVERY TIME. No matter how hot it is.

Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.
