Buying from Ebay - Will it fit my bike?

#1 Unread post by shoto »

Hey all, I got a Honda CB650, 1979. It desperately needs a new starter, it takes about 2 mins to actually start the bike!

So, how do I know if

Will work for my bike?

Thanks!

Hrmm, I've been told that it may not be the starter from a friend on MSN. Could be the Selenoid, or the flywheel...

I press the starter, it catches for a second, then I hear a 'whiiiiiiiiiiiinnn...", it starts better in first gear I find.

Like the starter is spinning without actually turning the engine? If so it is your starter clutch. Same thing I'm going through right now.

Yeah, its not starting the bike. I can get the ocasional 'putt' from it, but it takes a good 2 mins to get er done. After shes warm though, there is no problem.

So, how do I fix it?

Clarify a bit for me, is your starter not engaging your engine sometimes? "Putt" isn't real descriptive.

If it catches every now and then you may just need a battery. It may not be strong enough to fully engage the starter clutch or bendix or whatever it has.
Or the starter clutch or bendix could be going bad.

Sorry I havent replied, I been out this weekend!

I just replaced the battery, so I can rule that out. When I start the bike, it's easier when it's warm. It makes a 'whirling' noise, and every once in a while, seems to catch on a gear, and it'll then start.

Sure sounds like a starter clutch to me. Guzzi is pulling for the starter. Maybe you could pull the starter and have it tested to rule that out. Got the Chiltons/Clymers/Shop Manual?
