New bike - Yamaha 250 Route 66
Hey i'm looking to get in to biking this season, and have just bought (in principal) my first bike. A 1990 Yamaha Route 66 with 1,800 miles for 600 bucks. I just wanna check in and make sure this bike isn't known for any common defects and whatnot. I'm looking forward to hearing from you guys! thanks!

It should go into neutral with the kickstand up.Gawd129 wrote:I picked it up today and it's a sweeeet ride. Far faster than i would have thought for a 250. It stalls whenever i put the kickstand down though, and wont go into neutral without the kickstand down. is this some sort of failsafe or is this a problem? Thanks in advance =)
It should stall with the kickstand down if you try to put it into gear. Of if you have it in gear and put the stand down. This is a safety feature that kills the ignition system.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

Yeah, definitely a safety feature and what Sev said... As for it catching, not so much the case as it vaulting you along the road. A friend of mine, who's been riding for decades, lost a friend to that. His bike (in the 70s) didn't have that safety feature, his kickstand went down, and vaulted him off of the bike, broke his back on a tree and died... So definitely keep that system on there...
As for it not going into neutral with the kickstand up, hmmm, interesting problem... Sure you're just doing a half-click for the gearing?
